OCEANS

We come from the ocean—our water mother. The more we feel her, protect her both outside us and inside us, the more whole we become and the more we support life on our planet.

My poem OCEANS from our book, EVERYDAY MERMAID.

My poem OCEANS from our book, EVERYDAY MERMAID.

Mostly Water

A mermaid
I slip
both legs
into the bath
water
envelopes
enfolds
encircles me
in liquid—
all the way
to my chin

Shoulders
slide down
feet dangle
neck perches
on lip of rim

Inside me
water laughs
meets its sister
outside me

I float, ripple, undulate
in tiny waves
inside this boat
eyes closed

I am home

We are all mermaids
or some kind of fish

This poem has been developing over weeks from an experience I had. Funny how sometimes something you do regularly in your life penetrates you and you feel it on another level. Writing a poem about it helps me claim it, deepens the experience, and makes it more a part of my ordinary life. An expanding circle. So I offer it to you for the possibility of an expanding circle.
